John Strain featured on BBC2's Money Watch last night

We would like to thank Money Watch Producer Ian Rose and presenter Libby Potter and the rest of the team for featuring John Strain and his parishioners on their program last night.

They made it quite clear that savers are upset and angry about low interest rates.

But we were disappointed that they didn't get to some of the core issues behind our campaign and why savers are justified in being this angry about how they are treated.

However during the feature financial advisor David

Scottish Widows annual pensions report launch

At the launch for the Scottish Widows annual pensions report today, Steve Webb, the minister reponsible for pensions, opened the event by stating

“The worse advocates of pensions and savings are retired people who say to their children and grandchildren: ‘I wish I’d never saved. My neighbours got this and that, while I saved and got none of it’."

“There is such a lot of resentment. And the resentment where people who made the effort to save don’t get rewarded is huge. They are the sales force for not saving. We need to tackle that and make sure that people who have savings make themselves better off”

International Consortium of British Pensioners

We were very pleased to be invited to attend a round table event hosted by the International Consortium of British Pensioners (ICBP).

The aim of the ICBP is to represent the 1.1 million UK pensioners who live abroad and it has membership organisations in many countries around the world. The main issue that they are currently campaigning for relates to the basic state pension.

This pension is paid to anyone who has paid enough National Insurance contributions and the Government has now promised that it will be increased by the greater of earnings, prices (as measured by the CPI) or 2.5 per cent. Bank of England keeps Interest Rates at 0.5%

“Today’s interest rate decision, to keep the base rate at 0.5%, chalks up a thirteenth month of pain for Britain’s millions of savers.  With the Government doing next to nothing to support their prudent and socially valuable behaviour, whilst bending over backwards to maintain the damaging culture of spending and borrowing, it’s small wonder such a groundswell of anger has built up among savers.  The next few weeks will be a crucial time for change, whoever takes the reins after polling day, and we urge savers to join our campaign now for fairer treatment and concrete policy support.”
