International Consortium of British Pensioners

We were very pleased to be invited to attend a round table event hosted by the International Consortium of British Pensioners (ICBP).

The aim of the ICBP is to represent the 1.1 million UK pensioners who live abroad and it has membership organisations in many countries around the world. The main issue that they are currently campaigning for relates to the basic state pension.

This pension is paid to anyone who has paid enough National Insurance contributions and the Government has now promised that it will be increased by the greater of earnings, prices (as measured by the CPI) or 2.5 per cent. So far so good, but apparently if you live abroad this is not necessarily the case.

So for those pensioners who decide to live in the EU or one of the sixteen other countries that the UK has an agreement with they will receive this annual increase, but for the rest their pension will be frozen at the same amount as when they left the country.

This situation is not only illogical and unjust, but the ICBP thinks it is economic nonsense since it would save the Government money in health care and benefits if more people retired abroad.

You can read more about the issue in the article Thinking of moving abroad on our blog site. Or visit the ICBP web site www.pension-parity-uk.com.

We wish them the best of luck and will do whatever we can to support their cause.

A brief guide to inflation

Inflation is simply a measure of how prices are increasing. The whole point about inflation is that it reduces the spending power of your savings. So unless the return you are receiving on your savings is above inflation then the spending power of your savings is being reduced.
